English For Grannies

English For Grannies – an English class with a difference

English For Grannies is a weekly English conversation group held every Saturday morning at The Atrium Café in Reading. English for Grannies was started by our fantastic volunteers, with the aim of helping the Babushkas, nannies and grannies turning up to our other Drop Ins to learn English. It is a unique social club with a language practicing purpose.

The classes started in August 2022 with 4-5 people attending, and it’s steadily grown in popularity since. In the seven months since it started, we’ve had 205 attendances from the Babushkas.

Kate who leads the sessions, has been an inspirational teacher for the Grannies, making the conversation classes easy to follow and memorable. The topics covered in the sessions really vary too: shopping, travel, holidays, hobbies, nature, sports and transport have all cropped up.

There are regular grannies who attend every week and have made significant progress with their vocabulary and conversational structures, while making friends over a cup of coffee each week.

We are immensely grateful to the Atrium Café at Greyfriars Church for their generosity in hosting the group, and to Kate and the other volunteers involved each week.
