UK Election

July the 5th, 2024, marks the first day of the change pledged by the Labour Party during their campaign in the lead into the UK General Election.  The Labour Party will now form a majority Government in the House of Commons for the first time in 15 years.

Refugee Support Group calls on leaders at Labour-led Reading Borough Council, re-elected, and newly elected Labour MPs in Berkshire to use their strengthened communication channels with our new Government to demonstrate that change.

The United Kingdom should now:

  • Defiantly stand up and lead on the world stage, doing everything possible to immediately halt the unjustified inhumanity, slaughter and atrocities that are going on in Gaza daily.
  • Proactively broker an immediate cessation of the fighting and hostilities.
  • Ensure immediate humanitarian intervention for food, water and medical assistance for the people trapped in Gaza.
  • Establish immediate safe routes to the UK for refugees from Gaza.
  • Demand all parties to the armed conflict in Gaza and Israel should fully abide by international humanitarian law.

Refugee Support Group also asks you to request a commitment to further changes from our new Government:

  • Stop the Rwanda scheme. It is inhumane.  UPDATE:  RWANDA FLIGHTS HALTED.  Thank you.
  • End the hostile environment – stop the need for small boats by introducing fair and appropriate safe routes for asylum seekers.
  • Lift the ban on asylum seekers working.
  • Launch a Public Inquiry into the disgraceful profiteering of the private sector accommodation providers and introduce a system that is fair to the taxpayer, to charities supporting people, and which stops businesses making huge profits on the back of people who have lost everything and have fled for their lives.
