The Poetry of Afghan Refugees

The Poetry of Afghan Refugees

An anthology of human stories

During the last six months, our partners Rank and File have been working closely with Afghan refugees on creative writing for wellbeing.

Directly comparing and taking influence from both Persian and English literature and heritage, the group have made an anthology of 25 poems. Both the anthology and accompanying podcasts have been produced in collaboration with writer, producer and broadcaster; Fiona Talkington and poet and author; Kate Clanchy.

The anthology is a testament to the Afghan community, who despite facing war and conquest, have found their resolve through the written word. Holding onto and sharing the rich Persian heritage of words, and embracing new styles of writing, this collection of poems and podcasts share human stories that cannot be destroyed by tanks or rockets.

The accompanying podcast was recorded by Berkshire Recording Studios. To listen, please visit: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-poetry-of-afghan-refugees/id1613511469?i=1000553572200

Rank and File Theatre works with underrepresented groups within the local community, to help them find their voice within the arts. Telling the untold stories of Refugees and Asylum Seekers, Rank and File works with underrepresented individuals to create quality theatre performances, as well as provide other creative platforms to actively instigate positive social change.

The project was also supported by Compass Recovery College, a mental health organization that supports adults directly or indirectly affected by mental health challenges. They offer free workshops and social groups to equip individuals with tools and knowledge around mental health and wellbeing.
