Transnational Families in Europe Project

Studying care, inequalities, and wellbeing among different generations of transnational families

RSG is very proud to be part of the “Transnational Families in Europe” project, coordinated by Professor Ruth Evans at the University of Reading. The countries represented are the UK, Spain, France and Sweden and the focus is on migrant families.

This three-year interdisciplinary research project investigates the relationships between care (formal and state-provided as well as informal and family-provided), inequalities and well-being. A particular focus will be on young caregiving and how this affects children’s wellbeing, education and opportunities.

All of these issues have been thrown into stark relief by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has had an extremely significant impact on all aspects of life including the challenges faced by families with care-needs dispersed across borders, often navigating confusing bureaucracy.

For RSG this means recruiting several clients to be trained as research assistants. Additionally the stories of six families supported by the group will be gathered and these will contribute to the body of evidence on which conclusions and recommendations for future policy will be based.
