London Landmarks Half Marathon

Meet the team taking on the London Landmarks Half Marathon for refugees in Berkshire

We’re incredibly proud of our team of six runners taking on London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday 1st August to raise money for refugees and asylum seekers in Berkshire!

For months now, the team have been putting in the hard work, hitting the street and running miles rain or shine to help refugees to rebuild their lives.

Refugees and asylum seekers have been hit hard by COVID, but every penny our amazing runners raise helps to fund free legal advice, social activities, English classes and mental health support for families and individuals in need across Berkshire.

Meet Our Team

Meet our team of heroes taking on the big race and running for refugees this year:

Hussam

Dr Hussam was a surgeon in Syria, before being forced to flee to the UK during the Syrian Civil War. Hussam now works as a Caseworker at RRSG, helping give advice and support to other refugees. Hussam is working hard to become an NHS doctor, and when he’s not doing all that he’s training for this race!

Phoebe

Phoebe is passionate about refugees and found us online after searching for groups supporting refugees. Alongside all her training, Phoebe even organised a sold out show in Stoke Newington under the moniker @AlienFreqs with loads of brilliant live acts and short films.

Shady

Shady has worked for RRSG for more than three years, helping to support and re-settle families who have escaped the war in Syria. Shady is a keen cyclist, but this is his first time running a race, especially a Half Marathon!

Tave

In Tave’s own words:

Hi I’m Tave and I’m running the LLHM to raise money for RRSG to support the vital work they do to reduce the suffering of refugees in our community.

It’s so important to protect those vulnerable around us, which is why I’ve been training through blisters and thunderstorms to complete the race on August 1st!

George

In George’s words:

A friend of mine told me about RRSG and the amazing work they do, and having always wanted to fundraise for and support refugees this was a perfect opportunity. I have been so privileged to have a stable home and country for my entire life and I can’t imagine the challenges these refugees face every day just trying to live.

I know if I was forced from my home and had to go to a country with an entirely different language and culture, I would want to know there was someone there who was willing and able to help me out – and that’s the RRSG.

Training update:
I’m feeling really confident and comfortable with my long runs, and just loving being out so much, rain or shine – very excited for a nice day out challenging my body to do it’s best on 1st August!

Dave

Dave’s passionate about helping refugees and has been training hard alongside working two jobs to try and raise as much as he can for refugees in Berkshire. Dave also plays in a band and is hoping to complete LLHM in under two hours.

A Special Mention

We’d like to give a special mention for Mary Richardson, our Trustee. Mary was supposed to run LLHM for us and but has sadly had to pull out with a calf injury after months of training.

We wish you a speedy recovery, Mary!
