The government’s proposed Nationality & Borders Bill would criminalise seeking asylum, punish refugees and almost certainly cause more deaths with people crossing the English Channel.

It represents the biggest attack on the refugee protection system that we have ever seen and will close the door to desperate people who arrive in the UK to seek safety.

Under the bill, only refugees arriving through extraordinarily restricted “official” routes, such as refugee resettlement, will be allowed to claim protection. All others will be deemed “inadmissible” to claim asylum and the Government will seek to deport them. If they cannot be deported, they may be allowed to claim asylum in the UK but if they receive refugee status as a result they will not be given the right to settle. Instead, they will be regularly reassessed for removal, with limited rights to family reunion and benefits.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the bill does nothing to increase access to “official” routes. In fact, this is the first time in two decades that the Government has made no commitment to refugee resettlement.  We believe an asylum system is possible where people forced to flee the homes they loved receive compassion, justice and support.

Refugees Welcome Rally

We will be attending the Refugees Welcome Rally outside Parliament on 20th October ‘to show the Government that we oppose this Bill, and that we want to live in a humane and welcoming society’.

The government’s own Equality Impact Assessment for the Bill admits that there is evidence it will encourage more dangerous journeys by people seeking safety and won’t reduce Channel crossings. It also admits the Bill contains ‘significant scope for indirect discrimination’ and ‘potential for direct discrimination on the basis of race’.
